Can a society achieve both respect for traditional gender roles and gender equality, and how?

Yes. Giving women a choice of what they want to do, be it traditional or more modern, promotes gender equality. Encouraging everyone, regardless of gender, to decide exactly what they want to do with their lives, is inherently equal and still respects someone's choice to stay within their gender roles.
